Unbelievable Facts About ANTONOV AN-225: The Biggest Plane In The World

The world’s biggest and heaviest operational aircraft, Antonov An-225, is back again after a gap of 10 months. The operation of the aircraft was halted back in August, 2020.

Antonov AN-225 is operated by the Antonov Airlines. The aircraft is about 84 meter huge. The Antonov An-225 is known to have its wingspread of 88.4 meters, height of 18.2 meters and the take-off weight is of 1,410,958 pounds. This aircraft was designed and built in the year of 1980 in the Soviet Union. 

Antonov Airlines has observed a steady flow of business from operating flights into Afghanistan using the Antonov An- 225. Prior to the interlude of this heaviest operational aircraft and the biggest plane in the world, the Antonov An-225, have operated various number of relief flights for the transportation of the pandemic in relation to medical supplies to the places where needed. Reportedly, the An-225 has flown about 100 cubic meters of medical supplies from China to Poland due to the pandemic in the month of April, 2020. This is known to be the largest volume of cargo that has been ever carried by any plane in the world. By transporting even more and more supplies from China to France, the Antonov An-225 have broke its record and the airport workers took almost 10 hours to unload the entire cargo properly from the flight.

The biggest plane in the world, Antonov An-225 Mriya, has six engines and is a strategic heavy lift cargo transport aircraft and is designed and manufactured by Antonov Design Bureau (ADB), Ukraine.

Variants :- 

The An-225 Mriya has three variants; An-224, An-225-100 and An-325. 

The original designation of An-225 is the An-224. This variant has an additional rear cargo door. 

The improved version of An-225 is An-225-100. The said variant is upgraded with various new features. It has better communication gear, navigation equipment and a Traffic Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) which is used in commercial operations.

The extended variant of An-225 is An-325. It has an additional engine on each in-board pylon and hence, this increases the payload carrying capacity.

Design :-

The biggest plane in the world, Antonov An-225, is designed in such a way so that it can execute both military and civil operations even if there are worst weather conditions. Due to the way the aircraft is designed, it can easily carry Energia Rocket’s Boosters and the Buran space shuttle from the service area to the launch site as a part of the Buran space shuttle program. 

Cabin :-

The large compartment of the An-225 is eligible to carry a wide variety of payloads. The length of the compartment is 43m, the width of the compartment is 6.4 m and the height of the compartment is 4.4 m. The compartment can carry about 250t of cargo internally.

Performance :-

The An-225 Mriya can fly at a maximum speed of 850 km/hr. The cruise speed is 800 km/hr. The range of the aircraft varies between 4,000 km and 15,400 km.

Conclusion

The Antonov An-225 Mriya was developed as a replacement for Myasishchev VM-T. the original mission and objectives of the Antonov An-225 are almost identical to that of the United State’s Shuttle Carrier Aircraft.
